Winton, Queensland: Here is the statue of Banjo Paterson in Winton, home of Waltzing Matilda. (Click for a map) We learned the song in elementary school - after 15 years, it was nice to finally know what 'jumbuck' meant. Though, I'm still not sure how Mr. Swag managed to fit a sheep in a tucker bag... Also, the "waltzing" has nothing to do with the dance and "Matilda" isn't a person. Crazy.
There are about a gazillion covers of Waltzing Matilda, including one by Island legend, Stompin' Tom Connors. A nice little slice of PEI/OZcon. Comments
