iSaw: Went to see some experimental video at the SAW gallery for the first time tonight. You see, between my sceneless walk to work in the morning and the utter darkness that falls at about 5pm, I'm running out of daylight hours and subject matter in Ottawa to post. I'm forcing myself out of my cozy abode to snap photos and tonight was a good example.
To date, my knowledge of experimental film - zilch. This was clearly indicated when one video had technical difficulties and I couldn't even tell. I can't really complain, the event was free. Free is good. After the show, I met up with some music people and learned about extending nuts on violas. Despite not being a string player, it made more sense than the videos. Weird. Comments
Is that an actual picture? it looks like a silhouette cutout. very effective. don't feel bad about not liking the stuff at SAW. most of those people are hacks and the usual nihilists that inhabit such institutions. IFCO produces far better quality in its participants' work. I actually used to be really into experimental video and in fact did a couple of artist residencies in NY. Indeed, the last article I wrote for my column is on the nature of wanker hacks taking an unscientific approach towards experimental art. It's on my website if'n yer interested. While it specifically talks about experimental electronic music, everything said applies to all Arts across the board. Graham / 12.11.04Yup, actual photo... taken while waiting for the films to start. Lana / 12.11.04It's so dark outside. Stupid winter. Richard / 12.12.04wow that picture is so great! bad hair boy / 12.12.04Re IFCO vs SAW -- none of the videos screened at the above event were produced at SAW, it was a program of work from various external artists. Regarding Graham's article, I would argue that the videos at the above event were more than the visual equivalent of riding the filter cutoff knob. Not everyone's taste, of course, but I would argue that they were technically accomplished. On an aside: multi-LFO modulation rocks! ao / 12.13.04Oh yeah, hilarious foto/caption combo! ao / 12.13.04Post a comment
