Canal conditions: The canal is open for the skating season and the Beaver Tail shops were doing brisk business.
Tips for skating on the Rideau Canal: 1. Necessities: Backpack, plastic bag. Plan ahead, you're going to have to carry your shoes. Sure, lots of people leave them under the benches on the canal, but I don't like the idea of a)FREEZING shoes and b)the possibility (however slim) of not having shoes when it is -20. Put those slushy shoes in your plastic bag and toss them in your backpack. Easy. 2. Snow pants. If you want to skate the canal from end to end without any "bad tingles" wear snow pants. Repeat: "There is no shame in snow pants." 3. Money for coffee and a pocket. On particularly cold nights, you may want to indulge in a coffee or hot chocolate. A pocket? They sell Baileys in small bottles for a reason. This is it. 4. Finally, paper towel. The enemy of canal skating is excess snow on your skate blades causing them to rust. Bad. Make sure those blades are dry before you head home to relax. Enjoy the "swish swish swish" of your snowpants as your walk home. January 05, 2005 ||
