Smug + CBC = Crap: Working in the darkroom tonight, I had the radio tuned to CBC. I was making my little prints and listening to Brent Bambury on All in a Day. La la la... Brent is funny tonight... la la la... oooh my print turned out. It was great. La la la.
The show ended, the news came on and I tuned out. Until "As it Happens" began. I admit, I never listen to CBC in the evenings. And for good reason, this program's host made my blood boil as she (Barbara Budd? Mary Lou?) interviewed the newly Liberal, Belinda Stronach. I'm not sure what bothered me more, the smug tone of her voice that screamed, "I'm getting a scoop. Hey everyone, look at me. Look, I'm *grilling* Belinda. Ooooh aren't I clever with my questions. I'm having two pieces of cake tonight." It was the interview equivalent to the loud kid at the pool trying to get his mom's attention. "I'm going to dive. Mom. Moooooom. MOM!!! LOOK! I'm DIVING!" You know the type. Maybe she's always like this. Maybe she always stoops to ask the *obvious* question that everyone giggles about, but everyone knows isn't real NEWS. "But what does Peter McKay think?" I imagined that she had a slow smug smile drawn across her face when this question oozed out on the airwaves. Then I yelled at the radio. It was the worst interview ever. You don't have to be "bitchy" to prove that you're smart. There was no further "La la la-ing". May 17, 2005 ||
